PICKS OF THE WEEK
by Tee Kane
January 11, 2008

Wow! What a way to start the Picks of the Week column. If you logged on to Tee’s Weekly last Thursday you would have had the opportunity to make a few quid for yourself. Barack Obama is now 2.25 to 1 to win the presidency, a massive drop from the 6 to 1 that you could have gotten last week. I also implored you to take John McCain at 2 to 1 to win New Hampshire. If you were there for Christmas dinner at 106 Elizabeth St., you also would have heard me correctly predict the top three finishers of the Iowa Caucuses for both parties. As for the Democratic side in New Hampshire, I don’t really have much to say other than the Democrats in New Hampshire obviously are a fickle bunch. It’s a good thing Sir Edmund Hillary didn’t die before last Tuesday, or else there really would have been a sympathy vote for the junior senator from New York.

Washington State +7 at UCLA
I’ll take the Cougars and the points in the premier game of the week. The game won’t be quite as low scoring as the thriller in Foggy Bottom earlier this week, but it’s definitely going to be a tight, methodical game. UCLA is very tough at home and is deservedly the favorite, but Washington State should give the Bruins all they can handle on both sides of the ball. The one relative weakness of the Washington State team is its three-point field goal defense and while UCLA is an excellent offensive team, it doesn’t excel at three-point shooting. This seems like a two- or four-point game to me. By the way, you can also get Washington State to win the national title at 15 to 1 right now; don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Notre Dame + 6.5 at Marquette
I know taking two road underdogs at two of the toughest gyms in the country seems like a really idiotic move, but I think Notre Dame is ready to claim its position as the top challenger to Georgetown. Notre Dame has been one of my favorite teams thus far. They combine an Indiana farm boy in Luke Harangody with a brash Long Island kid named Kyle McAlarney. It’s an unlikely yet effective inside-outside game. Also, keep an eye on sharp-shooting junior Ryan Ayers who is shooting at 50 percent from long range.
