GANSEYBITCHES! Big Shot of the Week
WINNER: None other than Lavance Fields, Pittsburgh Panthers. Fields, who is from the same town as biggest big shot-maker ever Michael J. Jordan of Brooklyn, New York, made a step-back three against Duke University in overtime at Madison Square Garden that he will surely remember for the rest of his life.
With his team trailing by two points and under 10 seconds left on the game clock, Fields began slowly dribbling the ball close to the center circle. He dribbled between his legs twice as he slowly walked toward the Pitt basket with Gerald Henderson guarding him tight and low to the ground. When the ball got back up to his right hand, Fields exploded to his left with a powerful crossover dribble that instantaneously put him on Henderson’s hip.
His next dribble went backward as he stepped back from just inside the three-point arch to a foot behind the arch. Henderson was so deceived by the move that he was well below the foul line and in no position to contend Field’s three. As the ball was in the air, one court-side observer thought he heard Fields shout “Ganseybitches!” right before the ball hit nothing but net.
2ND PLACE: Michael Flowers, Wisconsin Badgers. The hometown senior from Madison came off a pick against Texas and hit a three-pointer to beat Texas by one. He followed it up by stealing the inbound pass to seal the game.
LOSER: Jon Scheyer, Duke Blue Devils. Scheyer took an NBA three-pointer after Fields hit his three, and he missed so badly he caught his own rebound in time to miss a 12-foot jumper that would have won the game. Instead he missed and his team lost the game and he lost this award.
The Tee’s Weekly Michael F. Gansey Big Shot of the Week title is awarded each week to the biggest shot in college basketball. Michael F. Gansey is one of college basketball's all-time clutch shooters. A pure, lights-out shooter, he was recently selected as one of Tee's Weekly 50 greatest college basketball players of all time. He set the all-time record for three pointers in a game for West Virginia with eight trifectas against Marquette in 2006. He has more career three-pointers at West Virginia than even the great Jerry West. While at WVU Gansey made a habit of hitting three-pointers at critical spots in games and could often be heard taunting his opponents while the ball was in the air by screaming "GANSEYBITCHES!" So, next time you are on the playground and someone shoots a three in your face and yells "GANSEYBITCHES!" you'll know why.
